Saumur this is our first visit the town is situated on the banks off the river Loire. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saumur http://www.loirevalleyfrance.net/places/saumur.html The campsite is on an island surrounded by the river and just a short walk into the town, there is a large 16th century chateau perched on a hill above the town. However, work on a fortified strong hold began around the year 962 and over time grew to its present size with many changes taking place, in the 13th century Louis 1stb decided to transform the castle into a palace. In 1080 to 1814 Napoleon transformed the castle into a prison. The castle is now a museum and many years of work have been taken to restore the castle to its current state. We took a tour with an English-speaking guide which was very informative.
We walked back down the hill to the town which is quite old in parts and you can see were they have joined old to new, When we arrived the flowers campsite had a full sign out, however there is a paid Aire right next door. The campsite looked very tidy showers, swimming pool and bar.
